Her father Vishnuchitt Swamy is also one among the twelve illustrious azhwars. He got her in tulsi basil garden when he was engaged in doing the maintenance work of the grove and procure tulsi and flowers for the worship of vatpatrashayi swamy.

She, toeing the line of her father, was fully dedicated to the worship of the Lord Narayan. To his utmost surprise, he got a dream at night Narayan commanding him to offer the garlands prepared and tested by Andal only. He could then realize that there was something special in her. With utmost awe, very carefully, he brought her up.

Coming of marriageable age, she rejected offer of marriage to any human being and offered to marry only Lord Narayan Himself. Lo and behold! The head priest of Rangnath Swamy temple, SriRanagam Trichirapalli had a dream instructed by the Lord to send a palanquin to Srivilliputtur to fetch her and offer her as His consort.

Later the pandya king Vallabhadeva is said to have built around AD the present temple. Great poet, Kavichakravarti Kamban has also sung the glory of the gopuram of Srivilliputtur in one of his writings. Thiruppavai is learnt to have been composed by Andal when she was quite young, and is being recited in all srivaishnavites temples early morning in the dhanurmas sun remains in 9 th zodiac sign, sagittarius , month of Margshirsh and Paush.

At Tirumala, Tirupati, suprabhatam for all the thirty days of the said month is replaced by the recitation of Thiruppavai only. The word Thiruppavai, among several acknowledged popular meanings, may literally be taken to mean EaoYz pv-a - shreshtha parva grand festival. For inner and deeper meaning of the verses one may refer several publications available on various websites.

There are 30 verses, and they depict how to observe the vow in Dahanur mas in honour of Srikrishna. The period of thirty days of vow begins from the full moon night of Margshirsh month onwards. The gopi of Vrindavan observe this vow to attain Srikirshna as husband and visit the river Yamuna for bath in early morning before sunrise. In thiruppavai also, in a similar fashion, Andal knocks the doors of all of her girl friends in the wee hour to move to the river Yamuna for bath.

Gathering the friends and reminding them about the glory of Srikrishna are the contents of first 1 — 15 verses. They take a vow not to eat verse 2 ghee and milk, avoid collyrium in the eyes, and flowers in the hair lock for all the thirty days. Thereafter they go to wake up Srikrishna. In the verse 16 the guards of Nandgop are requested to open the door. Verses 18 — 20 wake Nappinai, the consort of Srikrishna.

Verses 21 — 25 are direct audience to Srikrishna. Besides singing the glory of Trivikram verse 3, 17, 24 , milky ocean Padmanabha verse 2, 4, 6 , Raam verse 10, 12, 13 , and Srikrishna in most of the verses , the glory of Lakshmi-Nrisimha is mentioned specially in verse The solicitations are placed from verses to the Lord.

In verse 26 the age old tradition of the vow is mentioned which she has carried forward as a practice from her forefathers. The last verse is about Andal herself wherein she concludes with the glory of the vrata. The Hindi translation is being attempted to benefit the devotees not familiar with Tamil. The sequence of words has been attempted to be maintained similar to the original Tamil composition.

Pavai Genre[ edit ] Thiruppavai belongs to the Pavai genre of songs, a unique Tamil tradition sung in the context of the Pavai vow Vratham or ritual observed throughout the month of Margazhi. Sri Vaishnavas sing these stanzas every day of the year in the temple as well as in their homes. This practice assumes special significance during Margazhi : each day of this month gets its name from one of the thirty verses. There are references to this vow in the late-sangam era Tamil musical anthology Paripadal. Vaishnavas sing these songs to bring peace, prosperity and Divine Grace. Andal assumes the guise of a cowherd girl in these 30 verses. Andal appears intent upon performing a particular religious vow to marry the Lord, thereby obtain His everlasting company, and inviting all her girl-friends to join her.
